The much-anticipated reboot of Perfect Dark appears to be running into some difficulties, according to recent reports. The video game, first introduced during The Game Awards in 2020, is allegedly in "a very rough state," per gaming journalist Jeff Grubb's comments on the May 7 episode of the Giant Bombcast.
Grubb broached the topic of Perfect Dark while discussing the recent closure of four Xbox game studios, including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin. He said, "I’ve been hearing for years — that Perfect Dark is in a rough state. It Sounds like it’s in a very rough state."

The game hasn't shown significant development progress since it was announced nearly four years ago, even with the addition of Crystal Dynamics, a game development studio brought in to assist with the project in late 2021.
Indeed, by March 2022, Crystal Dynamics was confirmed as the lead on the game's development. Later in the year, Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios clarified that Crystal Dynamics' involvement was a strategic move to enhance the game's development, not a response to any issues with Perfect Dark.

However, despite the studio’s involvement, reports in June 2023 suggest that the game's release is still a number of years off.
With the latest news reagrding the game as still in "a very rough state," it seems the journey to releasing Perfect Dark continues to be a challenging one.
