Adobe's Creative Tools Utilized in 10 Oscar-Nominated Films

The films include Everything Everywhere All at Once, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Top Gun: Maverick, and more.

Adobe has revealed that 10 films that were nominated for Oscars this year utilized the company's creative applications, including three documentaries and popular movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Top Gun: Maverick.

Here are some of the movies where filmmakers employed various Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, and Frame.io as well as the Substance 3D suite:

  • Everything Everywhere All at Once

Parallax Post's editor, Paul Rogers, and his team used Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io to bring Everything Everywhere All at Once to life. The film earned a staggering 11 nominations, including Best Film Editing and Best Picture. Rogers shared that he was fascinated by Premiere Pro, stating that he couldn't imagine using any other editing software. Furthermore, according to the editor, with the aid of Frame.io, the entire workflow was straightforward, allowing Rogers to concentrate on the film instead of the tools.

  • Top Gun: Maverick

For Top Gun: Maverick, Film UI designer Jayse Hansen utilized After Effects and Illustrator to create and animate realistic cockpit, speed, and command center displays, which complemented the practical interior shots of the various aircraft. These displays were well-received by audiences, earning the movie six nominations, including Best Visual Effects and Best Picture. According to Hansen, Adobe's tools work seamlessly together, enabling his team to have an efficient workflow from design to animation, changes, and final composites.

  • Fire of Love

The post-production team of Fire of Love, a National Geographic Documentary Films feature, relied on Adobe Creative Cloud and Frame.io during the production of the film. The movie earned a Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award at Sundance and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the Oscars. VFX artist Kara Blake noted that Photoshop and After Effects were instrumental in creating the film's visual design and integrating archival footage from various eras. Furthermore, Frame.io enhanced remote collaboration, enabling the team to work together easily and efficiently.

  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

To enhance the visuals in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which garnered five nominations, including Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design, Digital Domain Texture Lead Artist Sarah Cosmi and her team employed Substance 3D tools. According to Cosmi, Substance 3D played a crucial role in the studio's integrated workflow, allowing the team to create every detail of the climactic battle of the movie, from the battleship to the oceans and beyond.

Adobe also boasted its tools that received global recognition, including in the form of various awards such as the Scientific Technical Award for Substance 3D Designer's "contributions to visual effects and animation" from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Lumiere Century Award from the Advanced Imaging Society for "creating innovative post-production tools and pioneering access to creative technology solutions in the filmmaking industry."

Additionally, the company shared that multiple film editors who utilized Premiere Pro were recognized for their editing achievements at the 2023 Eddie Awards. The winners included Everything Everywhere All at Once, which won the award for Best Edited Feature Film, The Bear, which won Best Edited Single Camera Series, VICE, which won Best Edited Non-Script Series, and Love Death and Robots, which won Best Edited Animated Series.
