The AI-generated images reveal realistic versions of the characters from the Japanese cyberpunk manga series.

Blogger and hobbyist painter Wayne Winged Angel has shared a series of images depicting characters from Akira, a Japanese cyberpunk post-apocalyptic manga series written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo.

All the images were generated using AI, although Wayne didn't specify which tool they used, nor did they reveal which prompts the images had gone through.

Akira is set in a post-apocalyptic "Neo-Tokyo" which was destroyed by a mysterious explosion and follows the story of teenage biker Shotaro Kaneda, militant revolutionary Kei, a trio of espers, and Neo-Tokyo military leader Colonel Shikishima who try to prevent Kaneda's childhood friend with destructive telekinetic abilities from ravaging the city and awaken Akira, a mysterious entity obtaining powerful psychic abilities.

The manga was once adapted as an anime and was planned to be turned into a live-action movie which was to be directed by Taika Waititi. However, the production was halted indefinitely when Waititi announced he would put the project on hold to direct the fourth Thor movie.

Apparently, what we see in the images is Wayne's version of what the Akira movie's characters would look like.
