Animal Logic's ALab "Phase 2" Released

The updated version of the scene brings 300 production-quality assets and two animated characters with baked procedural fur.

Last year,  Animal Logic, an animation studio that worked on Happy Feet and The Lego Movie, released USD ALab, a free test scene designed to demonstrate the studio's USD production workflow and provide 3D Artists with a better representation of the way Universal Scene Description is used in production. Recently, the studio shared the next enhanced iteration of this open source project – ALab "Phase 2".

According to the team, the updated version of the scene gives access to the expanded open-source digital production set, including cameras, lights, over 300 production quality assets, and two rigged CG characters with looping animations and baked procedural fur and fabric. The goal of the release was to foster further exploration and adoption of the open-source USD ecosystem "while promoting the talent at Animal Logic".

"This asset set provides another key piece in encouraging the wider industry adoption of Pixar’s USD," said Aidan Sarsfield, Head of Production Technology. "We look forward to seeing it used as an exemplar by individuals, vendors, and studios alike."

In case you missed it, Netflix has recently announced its plans to acquire the studio later this year to build a world-class animation studio. The two companies revealed they are working together on The Magician’s Elephant (2023) and Ron Howard’s first animated film, The Shrinking of Treehorn.
