Apple Will Allow Third-Party App Store Payments in South Korea

The tech giant submits plans to allow alternative payment systems to comply with Korea's new law.

In case you missed the news, last September, the South Korean government passed a law that forbids the enforcement of any particular in-app payment system in various app stores. In other words, tech giants like Apple and Google needed to provide alternative payment methods if they wanted to continue operating in South Korea. To comply with this new law, Apple has submitted plans to allow third-party payment systems, reports South Korea's telecommunications regulator.

According to Apple's statement, the company will provide an alternative payment system at a reduced service charge. It is currently not known when the new policy comes into effect, and neither is the exact service fee that will be applied. The tech giant plans to discuss these and other details with Korea Communications Commission at a later date.

"We look forward to working with the KCC and our developer community on a solution that benefits our Korean users," Apple states. "Apple has a great deal of respect for Korea's laws and a strong history of collaboration with the country's talented app developers. Our work will always be guided by keeping the App Store a safe and trusted place for our users to download the apps they love."
