Days Gone's Creative Leads Adress the 8-Million Controversy

Days Gone's Directors Jeff Ross and John Garvin have visited David Jaffe's podcast to share some behind-the-scenes information about the game.

Last Friday, Days Gone's Directors Jeff Ross and John Garvin had paid a visit to David Jaffe, a Game Designer, best known for his contribution to the Twisted Metal and God of War, on his podcast where they discussed several interesting behind-the-scenes facts about Days Gone. The developers have talked about the future of the game industry, told us about their relationship with Sony, discussed gamedev unions and how developers should be paid royalties, and more.

Regarding the latter, the trio has discussed the new Sony bonus program, which, according to Jaffe, means that "after the game ships, you won't ever get the full bonus unless you're there for 16-28 months." Jeff's comment on the program was that it "incentivizes people to stick around" and "encourages a wrong type of behavior.

Ross has also addressed the "8-million controversy" that took the internet by storm. For those unaware, earlier Jeff had revealed Days Gone had sold over eight million copies on the PS4 as of his time leaving the company in December 2020. Jeff explained, that a now-defunct website Gamestat was used to get the aforementioned number. The site, however, used Trophy data to calculate a rough number of players, meaning used copies and PS Plus versions would contribute to the eight million figure.

The developers have also commented on Sony's former head Shawn Layden's departure from the company. Jeff and John stated that the new leadership, formed after Shawn's departure, did not greenlight a sequel to Days Gone, which was in the plans. In Ross' words: "as soon as Shawn was gone, Days Gone was dead."

"It was very obvious that we shouldn’t be talking about Days Gone while we were working on the pitch and generating it. It was clear that it was a non-starter. And there was nothing in the pitch that made the local manager and his boss feel good about it. That's probably a failure of the creative group, but it was just an uphill battle the whole time."
