GDC 2020 Talk on Physical Animation in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Bartlomiej Waszak discussed the team’s approach to creating physical animation in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

A senior Software engineer from Respawn Entertainment Bartlomiej Waszak joined GDC 2020 and talked about the physical animation approach used in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The 30-minute talk covers the following topics:

  • A general concept of physical animation and its differences from a simple one.
  • Main methods of driving physics to follow - motors, velocities, constraints, and an in-depth look into the implementation of each
  • Essential production details such as PhysX parameters, Continuous Collision Detection, Partial Velocity Drive, and ground animation and movement techniques.

While explaining the mentioned topics, Bartlomiej also shared a handful of useful little tricks that will help you achieve a smooth physical animation.
