Sources claim that the tech giant has disbanded the team and laid off all of its members.
Microsoft is reportedly disbanding the team that worked on Industrial Metaverse just four months after it formed the group.
As reported by The Information, the Industrial Metaverse Core team was created in October 2022 to assist users with utilizing the metaverse in industrial settings and comprised of approximately 100 people. With the help of the team, Microsoft planned to develop software interfaces for managing electrical power plants, transportation networks, and industrial robots.
The outlet's sources claim that all of the team, consisting mainly of developers of an internal project known as Project Bonsai, have now been laid off, including both of its co-founders. Apparently, their leave is part of Microsoft's recent decision to cut 10,000 positions (or 4.5% of its workforce).
However, Microsoft's plans seem to not include killing off its metaverse efforts. In early February, the tech giant published a blog post detailing its vision regarding immersive technologies where the company stressed its commitment to its Mixed Reality program, including supporting and producing HoloLens 2.
