Midnight Suns, XCOM Developer Lays Off 30 Employees

The company attributed the redundancies to a strategic effort to sharpen focus and improve efficiencies.

Firaxis Games, the developer behind Marvel's Midnight Suns, has recently downsized its workforce, resulting in a reduction of 30 employees.

The news was first reported by Axios, which referenced a source with knowledge of the situation, and was also verified by a representative from Firaxis in a statement provided to the outlet.

The studio attributed the layoffs to a "sharpening of focus, enhancements of efficiencies, and an alignment of our talent against our highest priorities", adding that Firaxis "remains focused on developing critically acclaimed video games."

Firaxis' latest game was Marvel's Midnight Suns which was released towards the end of 2022. Despite the title's mostly positive reviews, Take-Two reportedly stated that the game did not meet its sales expectations but noted that the company remained hopeful that the sales of the game would improve over time.

In February, Firaxis' Midnight Suns and XCOM creative director Jake Solomon and studio head Steve Martin revealed their departures from the company. Both of them dedicated around 20 years to the studio and were key figures in the development of such titles as Civilization VI and XCOM 2.

The news of the redundancies comes a few weeks after the developer announced that it had canceled the Nintendo Switch version of Midnight Suns – this version was previously set to release alongside Midnight Suns for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One which launched in May.
