Niantic Lightship's Augmented Reality Developer Kit is now in the beta stage.

Niantic is broadening the developer platform to access its next-generation AR tools using its Niantic Lightship platform. Now, any game developer can become a part of the beta testing.

Previously referred to as the Niantic Real World Platform, Niantic Lightship is offering broader access to the new Niantic Lightship's Augmented Reality Developer Kit (ARDK), enabling developers to build interactive and immersive AR applications.

Niantic Lightship includes the full Niantic platform, including the tools and services that power Niantic games. The company claims that their goal is to set the industry standard for planetary-scale AR experiences.

According to the Niantic Team, ARDK private beta incorporates a host of advanced tools, including enhancements in three key areas:

This is huge! Niantic is competing with Apple and Google in the race of becoming the de-facto AR platform for developers. Curious to see what comes next
