Niantic is Developing a Transformers AR Game

Pokémon Go developers are planning to release Transformers: Heavy Metal later this year.

Niantic has been working on the game together with a Seattle-based studio Very Very Spaceship. The game is being developed in partnership with Hasbro that owns the Transformers brand. Transformers: Heavy Metal will use Lightship, Niantic’s AR platform that allows 3D mapping in real time and supports multiplayer mode.

"In thinking about franchises that would be incredible to bring to life in AR, Transformers was a no-brainer. This will be a Transformers game unlike any other, an AR game where you’ll get to team up with the likes of Bumblebee and the Autobots in the real world," shares Phil Hong, Executive Producer in the statement.

As a player, you will join the Guardian Network in a war against the Decepticons. You will explore your surroundings to find resources and fight Decepticons either solo or together with your friends. Battling the furious robot giants together with Bumblebee and Optimus Prime sounds like an exciting AR experience.

As the company announced, the game "will enter soft launch in select countries soon, and global launch is planned for later this year." Transformers: Heavy Metal will be free to download and play and will have in-game purchases.
