Nvidia Presents GeForce RTX Graphics Chips

Nvidia has finally presented new graphics chips for next-generation gaming computers during Gamescom.

Nvidia has finally presented new graphics chips for next-generation gaming computers during Gamescom. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2000 series graphics cards bring the GeForce RTX 2080, the RTX 2080, and the RTX 2070 with Nvidia’s new Turing architecture.

The thing is that the company presented the first consumer graphics chips that can handle processing for real-time ray tracing. Turing is said to be a foundation for a whole series of graphics chips that Nvidia can introduce in the coming years.

In several demos, Nvidia showed what games will look like with real-time ray tracing. It will add realistic shadows and lighting to games that otherwise seemed like they looked really good. The new Turing graphics cards have six times the performance of the previous generation Pascal chips.

“Games will never be the same,” stated Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in a Nvidia’s night during the Gamescom event in Germany. “Computer graphics has been reinvented.”

First of all, this is a huge milestone for creating photorealistic imagery with proper shadows and lighting in real-time, for high-end games and computer-aided design. We’ve been waiting for this since the 1970s.

Graphics cards couldn’t cope with ray tracing in real time with things like reflections, but it’s not the case anymore. Huang pointed out that light can now bounce around and diffuse in different ways.

The 2080 Ti features 11GB of GDDR6 memory with 4,352 CUDA cores, programmable processors that deal with non-graphics processing such as artificial intelligence. That’s 20 percent more CUDA cores than the previous generation! The RTX 2080 presents 8GB of GDDR6 memory with 2,944 CUDA cores. The RTX 2070 features 8GB of memory and 6 Giga Rays per second.

Prices here range from $500 to $1,200. The RTX 2080 Ti and the RTX 2080 are said to ship on September 20.

So what this means is that current games are going to work faster with more games bringing real-time ray tracing for movie-like effects in 4K resolution. The whole thing is about ambient occlusion, subsurface scattering, and many other effects that are captured in real-time ray tracing.

“We didn’t want to wait that long, so we invented the Nvidia RTX,” Huang stated. “Ray tracing on a brute force level won’t get us there unless we use this technology [the industry] discovered six years ago called deep learning.”

Nvidia is using deep learning artificial intelligence in its RTX series. Nvidia teamed with Microsoft, Industrial Light & Magic, and Epic Games to integrate RTX into their tech and create a real-time ray tracing demo, the Star Wars stormtroopers.

Turing brings tons of Turing SM, Tensor Core, and RT Core subprocessors — three different kinds of subprocessors that can do a lot of work independently. The RT Cores alone are said to be able of doing 10 Giga Rays of processing per second, or 10 times an older Nvidia GeForce 1080 Ti chip. The Tensor Cores are capable of doing 110 teraflops of processing, 10 times the performance of a 1080 Ti.

Huang also presented the future look of games with the power of RTX processing. He showed, for example, Shadow of the Tomb Raider with tons of shadows. He has also shown 4A Games’ Metro Exodus. Should we mention the beauty of the upcoming Battlefield V?
