PlayStation Will Not Attend Gamescom 2022

The company is joining the expanding list of other major game publishers who will skip this year's event.

Sony revealed that PlayStation will not appear at Gamescom 2022, expanding the list of major publishers who said they would skip this year's event.

The first big company that announced it will not take part in the popular annual convention in Cologne, Germany was Nintendo which, in a statement to a German outlet Games Wirtschaft, said that although the games show is the "key event" for the company, it still decided to skip it "after careful consideration."

Other major game companies, including Activision Blizzard and Take-Two, followed Nintendo's route saying they won't attend Gamescom's return. And PlayStation was the last one to announce it will skip this year's event.

Gamescom's organizers previously stated that over 250 companies will take part in this year's show, however, among the major publishers, only Bandai Namco, Koch Media, and THQ Nordic have confirmed participation so far.

Sony has previously skipped a number of game shows as it has shifted its focus towards its own State of Play events. At the same time, many publishers have simply stopped preparing pre-release demos of their games since the pandemic started, and have not much to show to the public at such events as Gamescom.

This year's Gamescom will be the first in-person event since the beginning of the pandemic. It will be held at the Koelnmesse convention center in Cologne, Germany from August 24 to August 28.
