PlayStation announced that beta users will have a chance to expand their PlayStation 5 storage by using M.2 SSD devices.
So far, storage expansion is only available to beta users. However, the new feature will be fully available in the upcoming software update. Right now, the consoles support PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs with a capacity of 250GB – 4TB. A minimum of 5,500MB/s read speed is recommended for the best experience. PlayStation also warns that "using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink." You can attach a heatsink to an SSD manually or you can always opt for an SSD that has a built-in cooling structure. PS5 does not support M.2 SATA SSDs, plus, as it is a beta test of the new feature, it is possible that a device that meets all of the requirements will not work on your console.
Once you install an M.2 SSD device, you can use the additional storage to download, update, and play PlayStation 5 games and apps. You can also move the applications that you have on your PS5 console to a USB extended storage device or the newly added M.2 SSD storage.
PlayStation, however, emphasizes that M.2 SSD installation should be carried out in accordance with all safety guidelines as a recklessly inserted device may cause damage to the console. Additionally, if you need to repair the console or restore the system software you need to remove the SSD beforehand to avoid unexpected troubles.
