Red Dead Online: What Should We Expect?

Rockstar has finally announced Red Dead Online, a new online experience that will continue the story of Red Dead Redemption 2’s huge open world.

Rockstar has finally announced Red Dead Online, a new online experience that will continue the story of Red Dead Redemption 2’s huge open world. Finally? Yes, we haven’t heard anything about the project until today, but isn’t that an obvious move?

Rockstar describes Red Dead Online as “an evolution of the classic multiplayer experience in the original Red Dead Redemption, blending narrative with competitive and cooperative gameplay in fun new ways.” The whole experience will start as a public beta test, so developers will have plenty of time to upgrade gameplay and put the finishing touches.

Red Dead Online is planned for launch in November 2018, and the team decided to prepare players for some turbulence at launch. Access to Red Dead Online will be free to anyone with a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 or Xbox One.

IGN talked to the Imran Sarwar, Director of Design at Rockstar North, and Josh Needleman, Senior Producer at Rockstar San Diego, to learn more about the upcoming online game. Here’s something from their talk.

First of all, Red Dead Online will use the world and gameplay mechanics of Red Dead Redemption 2 as a basis. Nothing new here — a situation similar to GTA V and GTA Online. “Players will be able to explore alone or easily join with friends or other players to compete or work together. We’ll take full advantage of the entire world, as well as all the aspects of a 19th-century setting that make Red Dead Redemption 2 unique and fun,” said Imran Sarwar.

The team stated that two titles won’t be released alongside because they want to develop them independently. Well, we have to understand that launching such huge online worlds isn’t an easy task. The team will definitely face some issues they’ll gradually fix.

What is the biggest difference between GTA and Red Dead online worlds? “You’re often speeding through or flying over a GTA world, whereas in Red Dead Redemption the change of pace elevates the intimacy of the overall experience. Like the single player game’s story of Arthur Morgan, we want people to settle into their online characters and feel like every activity makes sense for the character, the setting and the time,” said Josh Needleman. Still, Grand Theft Auto Online is definitely the template for their next title.

You can find more details from IGN here. Let’s discuss now. Are you excited? The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 looks huge and beautiful, but can we be sure about the success of the online part? GTA Online was fun with a number of great ideas like heists, but the game faced (still faces, actually) a ton of problems, which made it hard to play sometimes, so the main question is whether the team is ready to fix all the issues this time.
