Shader-Based Animated Bridge in Unreal Engine

Yoeri Vleer showed how you can use shaders to save resources.

Have a look at a cool shared-based animated bridge set up in Unreal Engine by Yoeri Vleer (Luos). This kind of bridge is not meant to be accessible by the player, and a skeletal mesh would be expensive in this case, so the artist decided to use some smart shader math instead.

"I am using the mesh its bounds to generate a gradient, animate said gradient, and use world position offset/rotate by axis to animate the bridge," wrote the artist.

Luos also shared a look at his setup in the video above so make sure to watch if you need something similar for your game. You can also check out the artist's Twitter page for more cool projects.
