Sony Introduced Mocopi, Motion Trackers for Creating Metaverse Avatars

The set of wearable motion trackers should simplify the process of motion capture for 3D avatars and make it more accessible to the public.

Sony has introduced Mocopi, a set of wearable motion trackers that can be used for creating your virtual avatar in the metaverse or becoming a VTuber.

As reported by Bloomberg, the Mocopi system includes six small puck-shaped trackers that can be attached to the user's head, wrists, ankles, and hips. Those trackers should allow users to record movements without the use of third-party devices – they can be recorded and saved using a special application, and then transferred to VRChat or Unity.

Each puck weighs around 8 grams, so as noted by some VTubers, they are currently the smallest and most lightweight trackers on the market.

Sony is positioning Mocopi as a gadget that will be useful for fans of the metaverse who wish to create their own digital avatars.

"We label this a metaverse product instead of a VR peripheral because we expect the virtual world to further blend with the real world," senior manager of Sony’s motion business group Takeshi Aimi said during the device presentation. "People will access the metaverse without head-mounted displays in the future, and we didn’t want to limit the product’s use to just VR users."

The device doesn't require any base station and can be used even outdoors so it should simplify the process of motion capture for 3D avatars and make it more accessible to the public.

Mocopi is planned to be released in January 2023 and is set to be priced at around $360.
