Substance 3D Designer 13 Has Been Released

The update brings a lot of new nodes, introduces Substance Engine 9.0, upgrades the Home Screen, and more.

Adobe has launched Substance 3D Designer 13.0, a massive update to the company's 3D material creation software. The release features a lot of new nodes, including two brand-new collections of nodes and the Portal node, introduces Substance Engine 9.0, upgrades the application's Home Screen, fixes multiple bugs, and much more.

The highlight of the update is the introduction of Spline tools and Path tools, two new collections of nodes that offer a lot of creative possibilities. The Spline tools can be used for generating and adjusting splines, as well as using them for mapping, scattering, or warping images, while the Path tools can be used to extract contours from a mask in the form of a list of segments and then edit and improve them.

Both Spline tools and Path tools are based on the newly-introduced Substance Engine 9.0, leveraging its novel Loops feature to their advantage. According to Adobe, the Loops feature allows you to "easily repeat a function many times, until a condition is respected". Additionally, the new version of Substance Engine adds a new Solid mode in the Gradient Map node's gradient editor, the ability to add border wrapping options in Sampler nodes, and more.

Furthermore, Substance 3D Designer 13.0 features a new Portal node, an extension of the Dot node that enables you to hide connections in your graph, enhancing its readability and providing a quick access to key nodes from anywhere in the graph.

The release also upgrades the software's Home Screen, adding:

  • The ability to quickly create a new graph;
  • The ability to see the list of all the files recently opened in Designer, with some details like the size, the date when it has been modified for the last time, or the complete filepath;
  • A learn page where you can find links to learning resources, like tutorials to introduce you to new features or to discover quick tips;
  • Direct links to the What's New screen, the About screen, the Substance 3D website, the Support Community forum, etc.
