SideFX Lead Instructor Ari Danesh has recently shared a 2-hour masterclass that explains creating terrains in Houdini 17 with a detailed description of the new erosion model. You can watch it below.

“This two-hour video goes through the basic workflow of creating terrains in H17. After explaining my basic workflow we spend a bulk of time discussing the new erosion model,” states the description.

Houdini is all about new terrain tools with realistic erosion, tectonic distortion, and collision-aware multi-scattering. The team has rewritten the erosion simulation from scratch, providing better detail with far fewer iterations. You can use this solver to generate different kinds of erosions: wide rivers, fluvial lines, river banks, and debris.

Houdini 17 also brings a new set of tools, which lets you modify terrain in different ways. This new feature is called the Smear Mode. It’s very neat to use for the creation of sharp peaks, or some places where you need to tweak the geometry of your landscape.
