During GDC 2019, indie-games developers Scott Benson, Ted Anderson, Steve Filby, Ian Thomas, and Bethany Hockenberry talked about implementing the Co-op model in the indie game studios, discussed the advantages of the model and shared their experiences in it.

The talk is divided into 2 parts. The first one is about the model itself with a visualized and understandable explanation of it. This block covers the following topics:

  • What is a worker cooperative?
  • A brief history of worker cooperatives
  • Top-Down vs cooperative structure: n intense graphics comparison
  • Why go co-op?
  • How worker cooperatives fit into the larger labor conversation

The second part includes talks from representatives of Pixel Pushers Union 512, Motion Twin, Talespinners, and The Glory Society. The guys from each studio shared the history od their studio, how the whole idea of founding an indie game studio appeared, the challenges they have faced so far, and how they use the co-op model.

GDC is a game developers conference dedicated to the game industry and all areas of it. The conference includes different sections such as the market-defining conference, GDC Expo showcases, community spaces, the GDC Award, and the Independent Games Festival.
