The team that worked on the Irishman movie shared their solution on how to make Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci look younger. 

In the film, the main character, Frank Sheeran recounts his past, and the time gap is quite huge - from 1949 to 2000. For earlier days, the main actors had to look younger to fit in the story. After discussing possibles ways of achieving younger faces of actors, Pablo Helman, VFX supervisor, suggested developing their own technology and software. There were 2 conditions for it: 

• no interruptions during the filming process.
• filming should be done in real life with real lighting and the environment.

Taking it into account, the new camera system was developed and consists of 3 cameras: one main camera and two so-called witness infrared cameras that recorded the performance with no shadows. 

The team also developed the FLUX software that captures the facial expressions, so it shows the shades and the lighting hitting the face and generates younger versions of the faces.
