Tutorial: Troubleshooting Foliage - Unreal Engine

William Faucher has published a new video on his Youtube channel representing a classic example of what kind of issues you may run into with foliage.

This educational video is prepared by William Faucher, a 3D Artist for games, archviz, commercials, and film for over a decade. His professional work includes Marvel's Black Panther, HBO's Watchmen. He currently makes educational content on YouTube, is a Mentor at CGSpectrum, and consults with studios to develop Unreal-based pipelines for production.

Anyone using Unreal Engine knows that Foliage can be a fickle beast. It works great when it works, but the moment it begins behaving unexpectedly, such as shadows vanishing, actors disappearing, flickering, all semblance of civility goes out the window, we swear and cuss and begin throwing non-fragile things across the room.

William will show you the most frequent issues that can occur with foliage, by replicating them and discussing how they can affect your project. With stating the issue you will receive advice and step-by-step instruction on how to prevent or fix the problem.

You will learn a lot about these common issues with foliage and their quick fix:

  • Disappearing shadows
  • Wind-related Shadows
  • Missing foliage, odd shadows
  • General Flickering issues

Sadly, this video did not help. I am making a massive open world game and trying to densely populate an entire world with foliage is excruciating. This video is good for a teeny tiny scene, but not for open worlds. Hoping UE5's World Partition system will fix these errors but not confident. UE5 really needs Nanite support for Foliage.
