Land combat, new PvP modes, the kraken, and more – everything to delight the game's active playerbase of less than 1000 people.
When it was reported last year that Skull and Bones – Ubisoft's infamous "AAAA game" and one of the biggest flops of the year – would be getting Year 2 support, many were quick to dismiss the rumor, unable to find any logic or sense in pouring even more resources into a game that had failed so spectacularly, averaging less than 200 daily players on Steam and allegedly costing the developer up to $850 million.
Showing that logic and sense might be foreign concepts at Ubisoft, the company confirmed the 2024 rumors to be accurate by officially announcing Skull and Bones Year 2, complete with Seasons 1 through 4, continuing its commitment to the "we have Sea of Thieves at home" experience.
In their Skull and Bones Year 2 Showcase, Ubisoft laid out plans for the next four seasons, revealing a lineup of new features including land combat, new PvP modes, the Kraken, additional ships, new world tiers, item ascension, new factions, and a host of other features.
Credit where credit is due, some of these additions do sound somewhat interesting, however, many have pointed out that they expected them to be part of the game at launch and view them – land combat, for instance – as essential must-haves, not as the "exciting updates" Ubisoft is presenting them as. Whether these additions can breathe life into a game that's barely alive and give the developer a much-needed No Man's Sky-like redemption arc remains to be seen.
Additionally, Ubi shipped a Year 2 Announcements Trailer, featuring flashy visuals, no gameplay or, well, announcements, and the "Long Live Piracy" motto, which, in the context of a Ubisoft trailer, comes across as unintentionally hilarious:
