UE4 Supports DirectX Raytracing

Epic Games works with Microsoft and NVIDIA to bridge the gap between real-time games and CGI.

A great piece of news for render-aficionados.

Epic games has partnered with NVIDIA to support their newly revealed RTX technology via the DXR API. DirectX Raytracing (DXR is aimed at bringing real-time ray tracing to the DirectX 12 API, which helps to bring real-time graphics closer to the CG standards of films. Epic basically brings these amazing features into Unreal Engine 4 in order to run ray tracing on the GPU.

To learn more about Microsoft DirectX Raytracing, check out this pretty detailed explanation from the company.

“The availability of these technologies is making real-time ray tracing a reality. By making such powerful features available in Unreal Engine 4 we are shaping the next generation of game and movie graphics.”

Kim Libreri, Epic Games CTO

“This opens the door to an entirely new class of techniques that have never been possible in real-time environments until now. Developers will now be able to build games that use rasterization for some rendering and ray tracing to be used for the rest.”
