Unity Blocks SpatialOS

It appears that a change in Unity Technologies’ terms of service has left Unity games created with Improbable’s SpatialOS under threat.

“All existing SpatialOS and Unity games, including production games and in-development games of all developers, are now in breach of Unity’s license terms,” Improbable pointed out. The new terms of service “specifically disallow services like Improbable’s” to work with Unity.

Improbable states that this development arose from an “open commercial negotiation” and the goal here was to find new ways for the two companies to work together.

“Overnight, this is an action by Unity that has immediately done harm to projects across the industry, including those of extremely vulnerable or small scale developers, and damaged major projects in development over many years,” Improbable added.

“Games that have been funded based on the promise of SpatialOS to deliver next-generation multiplayer are now endangered due to their choice of front-end engine. Live games are now in legal limbo.”

Improbable thinks that a reversal of the change is the ideal solution, but for now, the team has established an emergency fund to help its partners financially.

improbable will no doubt use their considerable resources to write their own but their partnering with epic to try and slander unity with this stuff is atrocious. obviously unity do not want people repackaging the engine as a separate product, running unity tech without license to do so. no shit. they could have worked out a deal with unity but they chose to ignore unity's communications so that they could then make this play. shady dudes.

fake news, nothing changed. it was clarified to stop people letting unity develop tech that companies rebrand and sell back to unity users as a service. they were told prior, told again and continued to ignore. no shit, let unity develop ECS and then profit off their work. no chance mates. now epic step in to try to claw users back to unity with a false narrative, shame on you tim!
