Unity Promises to Add More Generative AI Features to Its Engine

The studio presented its roadmap of Unity 6 updates planned for 2025.

Following the strategy to focus more on artificial intelligence, outlined in CEO Matthew Bromberg's recent 5 AM internal memo announcing the company's sixth wave of layoffs, Unity Technologies has unveiled its roadmap for Unity 6 updates set to go live this year, promising to introduce more generative AI features to the engine, along with enhanced performance and stability and expanded platform support.

Revealed during this year's Game Developers Conference, Unity's plan involves releasing three updates throughout 2025, starting with Unity 6.1, scheduled to launch in April. According to the company, Unity 6.1 will deliver higher frame rates, reduced CPU and GPU load for improved device performance, and enhanced debugging tools for easier optimization.

Additionally, Unity is expanding its platform reach by extending Unity 6.1's support beyond the current platforms, with the new additions including large and foldable Android screens, Meta Quest, Android XR build profiles, and Instant Games, with WebGPU available to all developers on supported browsers.

With subsequent updates, the developer aims to add more "AI-driven workflows" to its engine, including agentic AI tools integrated directly into the Editor and third-party generative AI solutions. The decision to focus on generative AI, despite the near-unanimous dislike creatives and regular users have toward it, appears to stem from Unity's own annual Gaming Report, which states that 96% of developers are already integrating AI tools into their workflows.

"We don't want developers to have to choose between stability and new features, or between fidelity and ubiquity. We are committed to delivering it all," comments Bromberg. "Pressure testing new releases in production environments with our partners is enabling much higher quality builds."

So, what are your thoughts on Unity's strategy going forward? Are you excited about more genAI tools in the engine? Do you think it will help Unity reclaim its position as the second-most profitable engine after being overtaken by Unreal Engine in 2024? Tell us in the comments!
