3D Metasites by 80.lv Community: Downgrade

Check out a new experience added to the 80 Level's cloud streaming service.

This week, we would like to highlight this incredible experience by talented Real-time Lighting & Environment Artist, Chathura Chandinath. Explore a dystopian cyberpunk world where neon lights pulse through the shadows of towering skyscrapers, yet loneliness lingers in every corner!

Downgrade draws inspiration from the Blade Runner movies, both 2049 and 1982, known for their world-building and cinematography. The goal was to recreate the rundown lives people might endure amidst ever-expanding technological innovations and towering skyscrapers. Levels and environments were designed with the player's experience in mind, aiming to evoke feelings of loneliness and disconnection despite the vibrant neon lights and bustling crowds. The final part of the level, featuring a huge hologram dancer, serves as an Easter egg, nodding to the iconic "you look lonely. I can fix that" scene from Blade Runner 2049.

Players can immerse themselves in a dystopian cyberpunk world divided into four distinct areas: a rundown city slum, a nightclub, an underground market, and a bridge. Each area was crafted with its own personality, atmosphere, and lighting, complete with non-playable characters going about their daily lives. The side-scroller level design allows players to walk or run back and forth, taking their time to enjoy the intricate details of the environment.

"The project was almost entirely completed inside Unreal Engine. Blender was used to make minor adjustments to some meshes as needed. Close attention was paid to the performance aspect of the level. The lighting and reflections are fully baked, with no lumen or nanite used, in order to save as much performance as possible while maintaining the proper aesthetics. The entire project took around three weeks to finish, with almost one week spent on the lighting alone. References go a long way when creating worlds, no matter how clear your vision is of what you want to create,' stated the artist. 'I always start with the big shapes (white boxing) and move on to smaller details, and this workflow consistently speeds up the process while minimizing the risk of having to redo things.”, stated the artist.
