Old Temple draws inspiration from medieval game environments created by Quixel Megascan. The project explores how altering the lighting can transform the narrative. The decision to embark on this endeavor was driven by a fascination with Japanese architecture, utilizing the free pack 'Slay' from MOLD3D Studio, available on the Epic Marketplace, to enrich the experience.
“One of the challenges I faced was delivering three distinct experiences by altering the lighting mood and ensuring each one was visually stunning. To achieve this, I started manipulating and combining tools like directional lights, exponential height fog, HDRI, and post-process volumes. Another challenge was creating a game-like atmosphere while optimizing the scene to balance realism, detail, and performance without compromising quality. To enhance interactivity, I utilized blueprints for actions such as opening doors and switching between light moods,” stated the artist.
This interactive experience offers players and viewers the opportunity to deeply engage with their surroundings by interacting with various elements, such as doors, to discover hidden secrets, encouraging repeated exploration and multiple visits. Each return promises a fresh perspective, as different lighting conditions—daylight, overcast, and night—dramatically alter the mood and ambiance of the setting. This enriches the understanding of the environment's intricacies and depth while enhancing engagement and replayability.
