Another attempt from the popular chat app.
Discord has become a popular messaging platform in recent years, and it undoubtedly provides a convenient channel between developers and players, no matter which platform they use, PC, PlayStation, or Xbox. Now, it's reported that the company is preparing for an initial public offering.
According to different sources of The New York Times, in recent weeks, the company has been in "early talks" with bankers regarding preparations for an IPO "as soon as this year." However, this is said to be "exploratory" and may be subject to change.
"We understand there is a lot of interest around Discord's future plans, but we do not comment on rumors or speculation. Our focus remains on delivering the best possible experience for our users and building a strong, sustainable business," commented a spokesperson from Discord.
This is not the first time that the public has heard about the company's attempt to go public or change owners. Back in 2021, there were circulating discussions that three buyers, including Microsoft, had shown interest in acquiring the chat app. In the end, the company decided to stand independent for a while and halt any sales talks.
During the past four years, Discord has enjoyed greater popularity and one of the reasons is that it is free to use while also offering advanced features for paid users. As a business company, it has been trying to increase its revenue, and its effort saw fruition as its revenue in 2023 had risen to $600 million. Last year, it introduced the sponsored ads function, which was regarded as a negative sign by the community to prioritize earnings over user experiences.
With the latest IPO news, gamers, who comprise the majority of the platform's users, which is up to 90%, have expressed their concerns over more ads and monetization features.
