The hope of 2025 being a warmer year for the industry, especially in regards of jobs related area, could become a pure illusion based on what’s happening. We are only half way in the first month of the year, and tech giants are making adjustments that would result in more people losing jobs.
Microsoft has decided to lay off people in various departments, including security, sales, and, unsurprisingly, the gaming departments. According to Business Insider, affected employees from the security unit started to be notified on Tuesday. Microsoft had responded to the report, saying “the layoffs were small” but didn’t provide a specific number. And this is not related to a previous job cut report by the outlet, which was said to be focusing on underperforming staff.
Microsoft is not alone in the gang of firing people, as Meta also joined with their decision to lay off 5% of its total workforce of around 72,000. This means that around 3,600 workers at Meta are at risk of losing jobs. Bloomberg reported on the plan CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared during an internal memo. The plan will see Meta’s headcount go down by 10% by the end of the ongoing performance cycle, and it includes a 5% reduction from last year.
“I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster. We typically manage out people who aren’t meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle,” wrote Zuckerberg.

Meta’s action will affect those who are eligible for a performance review. Those whose performance didn’t meet expectations, while the company is still “optimistic about their future performance,” will be given a chance to stay longer and won’t be managed out this time. The company promises to offer “generous severance” to people who are laid off.
