Sceneri, the developers of a new platform for creating, playing, and sharing user-generated games on mobile and desktop, have recently shared a comprehensive interview on their blog. Sceneri's Senior Software Engineer, Alex Klinger, discussed two vital categories in game development: AAA game engines and mobile game creation tools. During the discussion, Alex provided an all-around comparison of the tools and suggested which ones could best suit different types of game developers.
Alex shared his thoughts on skills and expertise required to create games effectively on AAA engines, typical development challenges, and performance optimization & resource management differences between workflows with AAA engines and mobile game creation tools.
In the blog, Alex mentioned that AAA creation tools are known for their ability to create high-quality graphics and immersive gameplay experiences, but they also require more specialized expertise and longer development time, and their cost can be pricey for smaller studios. On the other hand, mobile creation tools are praised for their ease of use, affordability, and accessibility to a wider audience, but they may have lower-quality graphics and fewer advanced features.
Alex provided practical advice on how to evaluate the trade-offs between different options and assess the most suitable tool for different aspects of game development, such as game design, programming, and art. The author of the blog post also emphasized the importance of considering the target audience and the scope of the project when making the decision.
"AAA engines let you use the latest and best features to create from the next great RPG with huge landscapes to the most photoreal shooter. But it will take years to reach that level. With no-code tools like Sceneri, you can start simple by using what the tool already offers and gradually learn more complex things while having fun and making cool games. However, you will probably not be able to make a huge open world multiplayer game with tons of cutscenes on your mobile phone. Or at least not yet!", says Alex.
