SEGA Reveals Plans For Next Fiscal Year: Fewer Games & More Investments In Certain Studios

Studios involved in such franchises as Persona, Sonic, and Like a Dragon will be strengthened and expanded.

Japanese video game company SEGA published quite a few titles in 2024, such as Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the 9th mainline entry of the series, Sonic X Shadow Generations, and a brand-new IP Metaphor: ReFantazio. In the financial results for Q3 of the fiscal year 2025, which ends this month, the Japanese developer and publisher shared some plans and adjustments for the upcoming business year.

Though the detailed plans are being "formulated" for FY 2026, "the volume of new titles in Full Game to be lower than this fiscal year." Full game here refers to those games that players pay to obtain rather than any DLC, extension, or free-to-play games.

When asked if SEGA is going to invest more in specific studios and consider mergers and acquisitions, the company said that no priority has been set for its studios. However, they do believe ATLUS, the developer of many famous series such as Persona and Trauma Center, as well as Metaphor: ReFantazio, is an important studio that plays a significant role in bringing Japanese IPs overseas. Therefore, it's necessary to strengthen it. Other studios, particularly those involved in Sonic and Like a Dragon IPs, might have more talents from hiring or M & A.

The spokesperson also talks about how the company's effort to strengthen the evaluation process of projects, both from internal and external studios, has been successful. This has been proved by the news that the studio is Metacritic's #1 Publisher of the Year, an evaluation that is based on the quality of games released in 2024.

Although the number of new games to be released will be lower next year, we know SEGA will bring a few games, such as a new game in the Virtua Fighter series, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi games.
