Unreal Engine 5.2 Preview Is Now Available

Check out the Substrate material system and new procedural tools that will be added in future updates.

During its keynote session at GDC 2023, Epic Games shared the first look at Unreal Engine 5.2. Among other new things, the update will bring a new Substrate material system and a bunch of amazing procedural tools.

First, as noted by the Unreal team, preview releases are not fully quality tested, so they should be considered unstable until the final release. Let's look at what's inside.

First, there's a new in-editor and runtime Procedural Content Generation Framework (PCG) that lets users define rules and parameters to populate large scenes with UE assets of their choice. The team states that this makes the process of large-world creation fast and efficient.

Another major thing is the introduction of the new Substrate system. It is a new way of authoring materials that gives "Unreal Engine users more control over the look and feel of objects used in real-time applications such as games and linear content creation."

What is more, the new update brings multiple improvements to virtual production workflows with new shot creation and scene control tools.
