Autodesk Released Maya 2026

New updates include improvements to Boolean, liquid simulation in Bifrost, animation and rigging enhancements, and the return of the Golaem plug-in.

Autodesk has released the 2026 version of Maya, its 3D modeling and animation software, alongside 3ds Max 2026. Like 3ds Max, Maya 2026 doesn't bring major changes but offers updates to its core features, including 3D modeling, retopology, shading, animation, and simulation.

Maya's Boolean node now features a new meshing mode called Volume, which computes results through volumetric meshing. This mode quickly creates a unified mesh from watertight operations, allowing for the creation of new shapes and forms. It is particularly useful for combining blocked shapes into organic models, like creatures and characters. The original shapes remain accessible and adjustable for fine-tuning, and the output mesh can be used with other Maya tools, such as retopology and sculpting, for further refinement.

Bifrost for Maya receives a major update with the introduction of Bifrost Liquids, providing faster and easier water simulation. This new feature is available directly within the Bifrost graph and includes a FLIP solver with adaptive resolution, particle-based foam, and enhanced velocity estimation. Also, it allows for emitting and blending colored liquids.

The 2026 Maya release brings several updates and improvements for riggers and animators, with a particular emphasis on the ML Deformer. The Animate in Context feature, integrated with Flow Production Tracking, lets animators view surrounding shots within their workspace and scrub between different scenes to improve cut continuity. It also allows users to switch between various pipeline steps (like layout, animation, and FX) at the cut and shot level for better context while working.

OpenPBR is now the default surface shader in Maya, while the updated LookdevX introduces enhanced publishing workflows, support for relative paths, and a new generative textures API. Additionally, USD for Maya plug-in now includes support for light linking.

Looking to fill a stadium with cheering fans, stage epic battles, or design cozy cafe scenes? The Golaem plug-in for Maya simplifies the process of creating and controlling multiple humans, animals, or creatures, from a few to thousands, to populate your 3D worlds. Last year, Autodesk acquired Golaem along with its team, and it's now available once again exclusively in the Media & Entertainment Collection.
