Check Out This Lifelike Fan Exhaust Shutters Animation Made in UE5

Made by the Inu Games with the help of their WIP vertex animation plug-in for Unreal.

Inu Games, a two-person development team specializing in all things Unreal Engine, has recently gone viral on Twitter for showcasing something you definitely don't see every day – a complex 3D animation imagining fan exhaust shutters reacting realistically to the air movements created by the fan of a digital AC unit.

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, this procedural sequence was brought to life with the help of the team's WIP vertex animation plug-in, feeding the "sin(time+phase)*amplitude into the Rotate Around Axis node and into World Position Offset" and storing pivots, phases, and amplitudes in two data textures.

As for the flaps of the shutters, the devs commented that they're all a part of the same mesh and are identified using their UV channels. "Same UV coordinates means the same flap, then these UV coordinates are used to read from the data texture, so each vertex knows its pivot and other parameters and can calculate its WPO for the given time," noted Inu Games.

If you'd like to learn more about the team's upcoming vertex animation add-on for UE5, we highly recommend visiting their official YouTube channel, where they shared a comprehensive breakdown of the setup a few months ago:

We also encourage you to check out Inu Games on the UE Marketplace and support the team by purchasing some of their previous add-ons for Unreal Engine 5.
