Distance Fields-Based Fish Behavior System in Unreal Engine 5

William Wang unveiled an impressive custom-made setup that makes underwater environments more lively.

Game Technical Artist William Wang has revealed an cool-looking, custom-built Unreal Engine system designed to bring underwater 3D environments to life.

Utilizing Mesh Distance Fields, this system allows schools of fish to react to player movement and navigate around obstacles, creating realistic and immersive underwater behavior. What's more, it is fully integrated in Unreal's Niagara with custom modules for responsive interaction and avoidance, as demonstrated in William's showcase, spiced up with appealing underwater effects to further enhance the immersive experience.
