Draw Details Non-Destructively With Vector Layers In Marmoset Toolbag 5

Learn more about one of the software's key new features.

In case you missed it, Marmoset introduced the next generation of Toolbag with the release of Marmoset Toolbag 5 last autumn, bringing significant enhancements in baking, texturing, and rendering. New features include interactive baking, hybrid rendering, bevel shader, vector layers, and much more.

Marmoset has put together a quick article on vector layers to help artists get acquainted with the feature and start incorporating it into their workflow. Vector layers are a versatile addition to texture projects, set to transform the way you add detail to your 3D models. You can draw shapes and curves directly on your model, eliminating the need to add detail to your high-poly mesh and bake it down.

These layers are fully adjustable, with three modes to suit your needs:

  • Tube: Ideal for pipes, wires, and panel lines;
  • Solid: Great for larger forms like vents and portholes;
  • Brush: Perfect for organic effects and repeating details such as nuts and bolts.

Easily adjust individual points and curve handles, store multiple shapes in a single layer, and use Boolean operations to create complex designs. Similar to other layer types, vector layers can be customized with material properties, enabling you to adjust surface details such as adding checkered grips to a gun handle. Also, the profile editor lets you fine-tune recessed and protruding designs for accurate control over edges and contours.

With the introduction of symmetry support in Marmoset Toolbag 5.01, all three modes now allow you to easily mirror designs, cutting your drawing time in half.
