Elden Ring's First DLC Is the "Largest Expansion" in the History of FromSoftware

You'll find here over 10 new bosses, a new poisoned swamp, and more.

Just yesterday, we discussed the gameplay of the long-awaited, and possibly the only, expansion to the beloved Elden Ring RPG that was initially announced back in 2023. As we already know the DLC is set to arrive on June 21, 2024, and it's going to be FromSoftware's "largest expansion" to date, as the developer states.

But what do we know about the DLC? Talking with Eurogamer, Hidetaka Miyazaki, FromSoftware's boss, shared lots of interesting details about the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

The plot of Shadow of the Erdtree is based on the original Elden Ring mythos, developed in collaboration with George R.R. Martin, and it's not a completely new mythos that the writer wrote for the DLC. Speaking of the time setting, the story takes place within the same period as the original game.

"It's not a brand new mythos that he's written specifically for Shadow of the Erdtree, he has not created something new which informed the design of the DLC. It's simply another part of the original story that we thought fit to tell as a new expansion," said Miyazaki.

The DLC guides players into the Realm of Shadow to follow the path of Miquella, while also immersing players into Queen Marika's story and the reasons behind Miqella's journey into those lands.

As Miyazaki shared, Shadow of the Erdtree introduces players to a brand-new area with expansive landscapes and different dungeons, which slightly surpass Limgrave's in scale.

The world of the expansion is distinct from Lands Between Rune, requiring players to use teleportation to access its locations.

"There of course will be large open areas, there of course will be legacy dungeons, but we've also experimented with something a little more in-between these as well to bring a more diverse gameplay experience," said Miyazaki.

Also, in Shadow of the Erdtree, players will find a new poisoned swamp. Miyazaki mentioned that he found joy in designing such environments after Elden Ring's launch.

With over 10 new bosses, eight additional weapon categories, and a range of equipment and skills, players can look forward to unforgettable gameplay experiences in Shadow of the Erdtree.
