Emio the Smiling Man is Not the Speculated Horror Game

Instead, it is "the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years."

Last week, Nintendo dropped a mysterious fifteen-second teaser trailer, which featured a person wearing a paper bag mask and a Mature 17+ ESRB rating, leading many to speculate about a potential horror game in the works.

The mystery around the smiling bagman has been unveiled — it turned out to be a new Famicom Detective Club game titled Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, which is set to release on the Switch on August 29.

"Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years. This title follows the previously released first and second installments in the series, most recently remade for the Nintendo Switch system: Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind."

Despite rumors attributing the game's development to the Bloober Team, it was actually developed internally at Nintendo under the guidance of Metroid producer Yoshio Sakamoto.

And here is the full rundown for the game from the e-shop where you can preorder the game:

"Junior high school student Eisuke Sasaki has been found dead in a chilling fashion, with a smiley-faced paper bag over his head.

This unsettling visage bears a striking resemblance to a recurring clue in a string of unsolved murders from 18 years ago – as well as the urban legend Emio, aka the Smiling Man, a serial killer said to grant his victims “a smile that will last forever”.

Does the Smiling Man really exist…or is a new culprit continuing on his legacy?

As a member of the Utsugi Detective Agency, you’ve been tasked with investigating the events that led to Eisuke Sasaki’s death. Along the way, scrutinise the clues and testimonies you gather for potential connections to the gruesome events of the past."
