First Full-Sized 3D Scan of Titanic Might Help Reveal Ship's Secrets

There are still questions that need to be answered.

The first full-sized 3D scan of the Titanic has been created using deep-sea mapping, revealing never-before-seen details and opening doors for further exploration of the famous mystery.

As reported by BBC, the scan was made in summer of 2022 by Magellan Ltd, "a deep-sea mapping company, and Atlantic Productions, who are making a documentary about the project."

"There are still questions, basic questions, that need to be answered about the ship," Parks Stephenson, a Titanic analyst, told BBC News.

He added that the model was "one of the first major steps to driving the Titanic story towards evidence-based research - and not speculation."

The scan captures the entire wreck of the Titanic. It was created by using submersibles, remotely controlled by a team on board a specialist ship. The team spent over 200 hours surveying the ship and took more than 700,000 images from every angle.

The depth of it, almost 4,000m, represents a challenge, and you have currents at the site, too - and we're not allowed to touch anything so as not to damage the wreck," said Magellan's Gerhard Seiffert, who led the planning for the expedition. "And the other challenge is that you have to map every square centimetre - even uninteresting parts, like on the debris field you have to map mud, but you need this to fill in between all these interesting objects."

Specialists studying the Titanic are excited about the possibilities provided by the detailed scan, saying "it allows you to see the wreck as you can never see it from a submersible", and believe it will help uncover the truth behind the events.

The model is an important milestone because the real ship is deteriorating underwater, so it might be researchers' last chance to get the full picture.
