Gabe Newell: Steam Deck Wouldn't Be Possible Without Gaming Community

Valve boss shared that it is devices' interoperability and compatibility as well as the support of the gaming community that allowed Steam Deck to exist.

During the 40th Golden Joystick Awards ceremony, which took place on November 22, GamesRadar announced the best games, studios, and hardware of the year picked by the gaming community as well as several winners chosen by critics.

The Best Gaming Hardware – the award chosen by the public vote – became Valve's portable Steam Deck. Other nominees in the category included Playdate, Analogue Pocket, Backbone One: PlayStation Edition, Roccat Kone XP, and WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD for PS5.

The company's president Gabe Newell himself accepted the award. During his speech, Newell shared that his own personal PC is assembled from different components from various brands and noted that it is devices' compatibility and interoperability that allows gadgets like the Steam Deck to exist.

"On my PC, I have an AMD CPU, an NVIDIA GPU, the PCs from Falcon Northwest..." he said. "I have a Corsair Mouse, I have a Logitech keyboard, I have a Samsung monitor – and it's that interoperability, that compatibility, that openness that really enables products like Steam Deck."

Newell emphasized that he accepted the award on behalf of the gaming community saying that Steam Deck wouldn't be possible without a community of gamers who are always pushing the industry forward.
