Ghostwire Tokyo's Ex-Dev Reveals First Details on Their Debut Co-Op Action Game

As well as shares some early concept art.

On January 20, Unseen, an indie studio founded by Ghostwire Tokyo's former developer Ikumi Nakamura, shared a seven-minutes-long video offering us a sneak peek at their debut game Kemuri, which was first revealed at The Game Awards 2023.

As Nakamura explained in the video, Kemuri is an online co-op action PvE game that you can also play on your own.

"Kemuri is a supernatural online cooperative action PvE game," Nakamura shared in the video. "This game merges the world of yokai with the real one, awakening the intellectual curiosity we lost in the process of growing up."

The team shared that they drew inspiration from dark fantasy to craft Kemuri's art style, focusing on "unique" animations, "unique movement" mechanics, and vertical-level design.

"I think players are going to be excited about matching our extremely cool animation with this amazing traversal system and then pairing that with some really vertical spaces that get you to use those game mechanics in a fun way," said Game Director Misuzu Watanabe.

The game will also include a reimagining of elements reminiscent of classic PS1 and Dreamcast titles.

Speaking of the gameplay, players will take on the role of Yokai Hunters. Well, now you may wonder what Yokai is. Yokai is a supernatural creature dwelling in a parallel realm. To detect these mystical beings, characters must use a superpower "Fox Window" that allows them to peer into the spirit realm.

Throughout Kemuri, players will acquire new supernatural powers and appearances derived from Yokai. Engaging in intense battles within the heart of the cityscape is also a key aspect of the gameplay experience.

"Engage in battles, negotiation, and acquire yokai to possess and increase your power. Unleashing the power of the yokai you change your visual appearance, using fashion to take action beyond human knowledge. The ability to collect various yokai adds high replay value to the game," added Game Director Misuzu Watanabe.

Speaking of the release date, it hasn't been announced yet. So if you want to learn more about the game or pass the time until it is out, make sure to watch the featurette Unseen has released.
