Let's take a further look at Butcher's Creek.
If you’re into horror titles, you might have already heard of David Szymanski, who is the developer behind a series of beloved titles like Iron Lung, DUSK, The Moon Sliver, The Pony Factory, and Squirrel Stapler. Today, let’s take a look at the latest project from the developer, which is a first-person melee horror game called Butcher's Creek.
Here is a bit of basic information about you, the protagonist: a lonely person who has a desire for cinematic gore. The rumor of authentic snuff videotapes drives you to an abandoned cabin in the remote Appalachian Forest, where you’re captured by a gang of sadistic killers and trying to survive. You’ll be fighting against them using a set of tools, such as hammers, axes, pipes, 2x4s, and box cutters. Your foot can kick props into enemies or enemies into environment hazards. This skill might be very helpful when you're faced with various enemies so they lose balance, giving you a chance and space to fight them one by one.
The game offers various scenes to explore, like “decaying farmhouses, collapsing factories, and seedy strip clubs in a forgotten corner of the Appalachian Forest,” each will give you a unique atmosphere to dive into. The showcase video released last year gave us a look at the combats that might remind some of you Condemned. The sound design, including the physics props sounds, is also exceptional.
The gameplay teaser trailer provides a closer look at the core mechanics, including the ability to carry props and kick them towards enemies to inflict damage. You might also notice that the constant sound of wind, along with occasional dripping, evil laughter, curses, and footsteps, help increase the overall immersion in the experience.
Butcher's Creek will offer around two hours of gameplay. A demo version is available for those interested in trying it, and we recommend adding the game to your wishlist to be notified when it’s released on Steam January 23.
