It seems to have dark and thrilling vibes.
Secret Level, an upcoming animated video game anthology from Tim Miller, co-founder of Blur Studio and creator and producer of Netflix's Love, Death & Robots, will feature 15 episodes based on short stories inspired by beloved video games.
One of the episodes will be dedicated to PAC-MAN, and reportedly, it will be entirely different from the original game. Dave Wilson, Secret Level's Supervising Director and Executive Producer, said (via PC Gamer): "We got on the call with the developers at Bandai, and the translated mission statement was: 'We would like audiences to wonder what the f*ck they did with PAC-MAN.' And so we were like, no problem."
The episode seems to be dark and somber, which is completely different from the mood of the original game. "Eat or be eaten," reads the slogan.
The PAC-MAN developers have seen the script and approve of the changes in the story's inflection. According to Dave Wilson, the only thing the devs wished to change was the logo placement. "Other than that, it was whatever we want to do."
Other video game studios also left the creative freedom to the series authors. Creator and Executive Pproducer Tim Miller said: "So we have a lot of trust built up with folks that we're going to handle their IP carefully, and we're not going to go off and do terrible things to it." Miller also commented on the possible reasons: "I don't think the show would be possible without that [trust], because, honestly, many of them are busy making games." He added: "They don't have time to babysit us."
The show will launch on December 10. Other titles that will appear in the series are Armored Core, Concord, Crossfire, Dungeons & Dragons, Exodus, Honor of Kings, Mega Man, New World: Aeternum, Various PlayStation Studios titles, including God of War, Sifu, Spelunky, The Outer Worlds, Unreal Tournament, and Warhammer 40,000.
