SpeedTree 10 Has Been Released

Introducing new physics-based vines generator, freehand pruning, and enhanced mesh-rigging.

This update to Unity's tree-generation software focuses on enhancing the modeling capabilities while promoting better iteration, integration, and art direction. In addition to the ever-growing Tree Library and SDK expansion, SpeedTree 10 introduces a new procedural tool for creating vines, a Trim tool for manually refining tree shapes, and a Mesh helper using curves to control and build off hero meshes.

Vines have been a part of SpeedTree for a long time, but now you can effortlessly create physics-based swooping and hanging vines on any tree, between multiple objects, or on the ground, all responding to gravity and wind forces. This feature is perfect for adding a wild touch to dense jungles or charm to a cozy garden trellis.

The Freehand mode now includes a Trim tool for adjusting the overall shape of a tree by manually pruning away parts of branches. The tool offers various trim modes to achieve your desired results, whether you want to cut, shrink, or remove a branch, and allows you to totally or selectively undo the trim.

A new Shade Pruning option removes leaves from the shaded interior of the tree, helping you replicate natural growth patterns and reduce the poly count and overdraw.

While SpeedTree's photogrammetry tools offer one way to use meshes, SpeedTree Modeler 10 adds a "mesh helper" scene object that lets you draw curves on hero meshes between markers and connect them to a new spine-only Branch generator.

You can create multiple spine-only branches from the same hero mesh, organized in a complex hierarchy, to serve as sources for additional Branch generators. This provides full control over the tree, ensuring seamless animation in the wind.

Additionally, SpeedTree 10 revamps the user interface and brings some quality-of-life improvements.
