Windows And Surface Lead Decides To Leave Microsoft

Panos Panay, the chief product officer at Microsoft behind Windows and Surface development, announced in a tweet he is leaving the company. Employees of Microsoft were informed of the news through an internal email. The departure is described as sudden as previously he had announced his participation in a presentation on September 21, 2023, where the team is expected to unveil the new generation of Surface products.

Panay originally joined Microsoft back in 2004 as a group program manager and then managed to land a lead role on the team responsible for the development of the Surface device line. By 2018, he became the head of the product division and later oversaw the development of Windows 11. In 2021, Panay became an executive vice president of the company joining the top leadership team.

"After 19 incredible years at Microsoft, I've decided to turn the page and write the next chapter. I’m forever grateful for my time at Microsoft and the amazing people I had the honor to make products with," wrote Panay.

Now, Microsoft’s consumer marketing head, Yusuf Mehdi, will be managing the Windows and Surface divisions, the company has shared. "Moving forward, we will double down on our strategy. These changes will be effective immediately with Panos’ help in the transition," Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s vice president of experience and devices, wrote in a letter to employees.

"Build silicon, systems, and devices that span Windows, client, and cloud for an AI world. This team will be led by Pavan Davuluri, who will report directly to me."
