6 Pieces of Advice on How to Become a Successful 3D Artist

Senior Character Artist and mentor Georgian Avasilcutei shared his thoughts on the path of getting successful in the industry and shared useful tips on it.

Senior Character Artist and mentor Georgian Avasilcutei has been in the industry for over 20 years now, starting his journey in VFX, then moving to the character art and started mentorships. After working as a mentor for some time, he noticed a few things that beginners do wrong when it comes to the goals and focus which lead to an article with 6 pieces of advice on how to become successful in CG industry and a few useful tips on how to motivate yourself. Here’s the summary of them:

1. Understand your level. This way, you’ll know how to move forwards and which things to focus on.

2. Getting good at 3D art takes a lot of time. There’s no short road to success here. As Georgian points out: “To get a medium level, you need at least 3 years of full times days of work, almost 5 years for character artists”.

3. Be passionate if you want to have high-quality works. Staying motivated can be tough these days, and Georgian shared a useful tip: “ If you can’t push yourself easily to do the work, just wake up in the morning, go to the pc, open up the last scene you were working on and the just leave it there in the background while you browse the social media or playing some games…you will eventually feel bad for ignoring it and will start working on it.”

4. Don’t let time-lapses fool you or set high expectations about the production process and its speed. For instance, Georgian shared that he spent 7 hours of streaming on sculpting, then 30-40 hours on refining and cleaning up. Go slow at first and then try to speed up your workflow a bit.

5. Find a good mentor among all bad ones who will help you follow the right direction. Pay attention to who you’re choosing and paying to, search the artist and its artistic capabilities before deciding to pick him as your mentor.

5. Quality over quantity. Try to build your portfolio as well as possible. It’s better to have one outstanding character with high quality than several mediocre pieces.
