An Artist Simulates Different Types of Sand in Houdini

Martin Chumillas showcased a series of simulations made with Vellum Grains.

While there are at least four good reasons to dislike sand in real life, its not-as-coarse-and-rough digital counterpart usually evokes nothing but astonishment, a fact that's recently been proven once again by Martin Chumillas, a talented 3D Artist specializing in VFX.

In a recent demo, Martin showcased a series of simulations portraying three distinct types of sand – dry, wet, and half-wet. Created for study purposes, these impressive simulations were set up in SideFX's flagship procedural 3D software, Houdini, utilizing Vellum Grains. Additionally, the creator harnessed Houdini's built-in renderer, Mantra, to render the sims on a PC with GTX 3070 GPU, Ryzen 9 3900X, and 64 GB of RAM.
