Arrowhead CEO: Full Helldivers 2 Experience Should Come Before Live Service Part

"We view ourselves as a live service game because it's unfair to say anything else."

Helldivers 2 is a really popular game by Arrowhead Game Studios with so many concurrent players that the developers had to increase the capacity of the servers.

It is a live service game, but Arrowhead's CEO, Johan Pilestedt, doesn't want to embrace the title fully, it seems. In an interview with PC Gamer, he admitted that the team has to call it that because Helldivers 2 has certain elements pointing at the term, but he thinks the live service part should "go hand-in-hand" with the "full experience" the game offers, "like a really good several hours of good playtime."

"We view ourselves as a live service game because it's unfair to say anything else," he said. "We are going to continue adding more stuff to the game, and there are monetization elements in the game."

Pilestedt believes further monetization should be optional and come after the base game is over. So, let's say, in a year or two after the experience with its free content is over, Pilestedt wants to give fans an opportunity to support the studio.

"And that kind of has always been our philosophy and any game that we've made so far. And we expect to continue having the same mentality for as long as we can."

Now, Helldivers 2 offers a $10 premium warbond with extra guns and outfits. They are a little like battle passes but last forever and you can't open them all at once by paying more money.

Pilestedt's vision is partly influenced by his involvement in the modding community. He used to help mod teams with art, level design, and code for games like Quake and Half-Life. Hopefully, his ideas won't turn into greedy initiatives with Helldivers 2's increasing popularity.
