It runs with no FLIP simulation.
Cool water effects don't have to be heavy, as proven by VFX Generalist Mattia Merenda, who set up an impressive rain FX in Houdini, drenching Spider-Man in the process.
According to him, it is procedural (not physics-based), fast, and cheap, running "almost in real time" without FLIP simulations. The effect was created using "a POPs sim to source and move the points on a fixed vel field."
If you're curious about the workflow, Merenda should soon provide a tutorial for the setup. Meanwhile, visit his X/Twitter to find more interesting projects.
We also have other rain simulations you might be interested in: realistic setups in Houdini or Houdini and UE5, real-time in Blender, and stylized with Geometry Nodes.
